Show Garden

Theme: Explorer Garden

This show garden for the Jacksons Fencing Show Gardens Design competition 2011 made it to the final 5 designs and was highly commended. It shows how an awkward part of a garden can be transformed into an exciting space for children and adults alike. Primarily a childrens area, the garden is an explorer’s paradise, the main focus being the raised deck where kids can see over the garden and imagine their own world. There’s a space beneath the deck ideal for creating dens and a long wooden deck set amongst the planting where they can “sail” down a “river” Swallows and Amazons-style. The design is subtle enough for adults to relax up on the deck and survey the beautiful planting below.
Plants are long flowering and low maintenance, whilst others are jungle-style and large leafed great for hiding behind. Tall spires such as Acanthus give height and drama. Bamboos provide screening and sound quality and the single Prunus serrula has fantastic textural and seasonal qualities.

This low maintenance garden was designed for a couple whose children had grown-up and they could now use the space to relax and entertain. This garden needed to be easy to look after and planting is mainly evergreen and fast growing to provide year round interest in as short a time as possible. A curved brick edged lawn gives shape and fluidity to the garden and an arbour has been added to provide height along with with scented planting for a private seating area. There is a new paved area to maximise the entertaining space for the whole family.

Town Garden

This town garden was designed for a busy couple who wanted somewhere they could relax and enjoy their own private space. Planting was year-round and low maintenance but texturally interesting using perennial grasses to create “rooms” and height within the garden. Geometric lawned areas were formed as an integral part of the design and these were surrounded by low growing scented plants. Discreet areas for storage were also included and so made the most of this town garden.
To be constructed Spring/Summer 2009

Family garden

This rural garden in Kent was designed for a family with two children. Each family member’s requirements were different and so the task was to design a garden with many elements to suit all including a lap pool, dens and secluded area. The existing fruit trees were largely kept and a contemporary vegetable garden and planting for texture and sound were added.

An exposed situation, expanse of lawn and poor soil were the main features of this irregularly-shaped new build garden. The clients required a space for their young children to enjoy with areas of shade and interesting planting that could cope with the windy site. Working with an oval shape to cope with the awkward shape, raised beds were constructed and meant that good topsoil could be imported while planting is wind tolerant but still ornamental working across the seasons. An arbour and small feature tree provide the all important shade aspect.

The brief here was simply to renovate an existing border and totally replant what had become a tired space in the garden. The client wanted a structural, more contemporary planting that would sit well with the rest of the garden. A “dry garden” theme was used to utilise the conditions in that part of the garden and planting has quickly established and flourished.
